Heureuse faute si jamais il y eut faute (certains portraits remontant à cette première période sont troublants de vérité humaine) car cette démarche lui offrait la possibilité d’affiner et de nuancer sa vision, d'asseoir son dessin, de découvrir les subtilités de la couleur.

...early on, Pascal Smarth was fascinated by the world around him and tried to capture it in a style close to photorealism. A providential mistake if ever it was a mistake (some of the portraits of that first period are striking in their kind-hearted truth) because this approach gave him the possibility to modify his vision, to ascertain his draftsmanship and discover the subtlety of colors.
